Dogs cool themselves by panting, and panting has limits: on a warm day a thick-coated dog can be struggling well before they show any obvious sign of it.
A cooling vest gives them some help, keeping a dog more comfortable in conditions that would otherwise cut the outing short. It's an aid, not a solution.
Heatstroke signs are heavy panting, drooling, bright red gums, weakness, vomiting or confusion: a medical emergency requiring gradual cooling and an immediate vet visit.
Follow the instructions supplied with the vest, and check it periodically during wear rather than fitting it and forgetting.
Thick-coated, dark-coated, flat-faced and older dogs all struggle more in heat than others.
No. A vest doesn't make hot conditions safe. Walk early morning or late evening instead.
Test it with the back of your hand. If it's too hot for you to hold there for a few seconds, it will burn paw pads.
